InfoQ has put together a good roundup of analyst opinions about the state of the platform as a service (PaaS) market. PaaS offerings appear to fill an important enterprise need, but they just aren’t getting that many customers. Some have gone so far as to say that PaaS is dying, and others have argued that it is getting absorbed into the IaaS market.
Mike Kavis says that three factors are preventing wider PaaS adoption: confusing marketing messages, lack of maturity and the limitations of the platforms. He concludes, “PaaS is not dead: in fact, it is just in its infancy, waiting to take the market by storm. The problem is that in its current form it is not quite what many enterprises are willing to put their chips on yet.”
