Where Do Downloads Go on Android?
By default, every file you download on Android goes to the Downloads folder in your phone’s internal storage. The full path is Internal storage/Download. This includes PDFs, images, APK files, documents, music, and anything else downloaded from the web or apps.
Method 1: Use the Files App (Fastest)
Every Android phone comes with a built-in file manager:
- Open the Files app (called “Files by Google” on Pixel, “My Files” on Samsung, or “File Manager” on other phones)
- Tap Downloads — this is usually right on the main screen
- All your downloaded files appear here, sorted by most recent
On Samsung Galaxy phones, open My Files and tap Downloads at the top of the screen.
On Google Pixel phones, open Files by Google and tap the Downloads category.
Method 2: Check Your Browser’s Download History
Google Chrome:
- Open Chrome
- Tap the three-dot menu (⋮) in the top-right
- Tap Downloads
- You’ll see a list of all recent downloads with options to open or share each file
Samsung Internet:
- Open Samsung Internet
- Tap the three-line menu (≡) at the bottom
- Tap Downloads
Method 3: Check the Notification Panel
When a download completes, Android shows a notification. If you just downloaded something:
- Swipe down from the top of your screen
- Look for the “Download complete” notification
- Tap it to open the file directly
If you accidentally dismissed the notification, use Method 1 or 2 instead.
Method 4: Search for Files
If you know the file name but can’t find it:
- Open the Files app
- Tap the Search icon (magnifying glass)
- Type part of the file name or the file extension (like .pdf or .jpg)
- The file manager will search your entire phone
Where Do Specific File Types Go?
While most downloads land in the Downloads folder, some apps save files to different locations:
- Photos from WhatsApp:
Internal storage/Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media/WhatsApp Images - Spotify offline music:
Internal storage/Android/data/com.spotify.music(encrypted, can’t play outside Spotify) - Screenshots:
Internal storage/DCIM/ScreenshotsorInternal storage/Pictures/Screenshots - Camera photos:
Internal storage/DCIM/Camera - APK files: Usually in
Internal storage/Download
How to Change the Default Download Location
You can change where Chrome saves downloads:

- Tap Downloads
- Tap Download location
- Choose Internal storage or SD card
- You can also enable “Ask where to save files” to choose each time
FAQ
Why can’t I find my downloaded file?
The most common reasons: (1) The download didn’t complete — check Chrome downloads for failed downloads. (2) The file was saved by an app to a different folder. (3) The file was automatically deleted by a storage cleaner app. Try searching by file name in the Files app.
How do I find downloads on Samsung Galaxy?
Open the My Files app (in your app drawer or Samsung folder) and tap Downloads. You can also tap Internal storage → Download to browse the folder directly.
Can I recover deleted downloads?
If you recently deleted a file, check the Trash or Recycle bin in your Files app (Samsung My Files has a Trash feature). Files in trash are kept for 30 days before permanent deletion. For older files, you may need a data recovery app, though success isn’t guaranteed.
