Albanese reshuffles cabinet: Burke leads cybersecurity

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has appointed Tony Burke as the new minister for home affairs and cybersecurity. Burke will take on multiple responsibilities, including immigration, multicultural affairs, arts, and Leader of the House. This cabinet change comes two years after cybersecurity was established as a standalone portfolio following significant data breaches.

During this period, Australia faced numerous cyberattacks, including four of its most significant data breaches. Albanese also named Andrew Charlton as the special envoy for cybersecurity and digital resilience to further strengthen the nation’s cybersecurity. In a statement, the Prime Minister said, “This will be a particular task that I’ve discussed with Andrew, as well as with Tony Burke, the Minister for Cybersecurity, and with Michelle Rowland, the Minister for Communications, about where Australia, and indeed the world, is going on the range of issues with technology changing the way that we relate to each other, the way that our entire society functions.

Albanese emphasized that Andrew Charlton is a great thinker and someone he wanted to step up in this critical role.

These combined changes, I think, represent a significant move forward,” he added.

Additionally, Clare O’Neil has been appointed minister for housing and homelessness.

The changes come amid rising criticisms and public backlash about Australia’s immigration policies. A High Court ruling in November declared the indefinite detention of migrants to be “unlawful,” overturning a 20-year-old bipartisan policy. This decision led to the release of nearly 150 detainees, many of whom had been refused visas due to prior convictions.

The released detainees, formerly held in spartan conditions for years, included individuals who had been convicted of serious crimes, such as murder and assault. After their release, officials scrambled to impose strict monitoring measures, including ankle bracelets and curfews, to mitigate the resultant public safety concerns. The reshuffling of key ministers signals an attempt by Albanese’s government to address mounting criticisms and reset its approach to handling immigration and national security.
