E-scooters combating power outages in Vietnam

E-scooters combating power outages in Vietnam

"Outage Combat Scooters"

An exciting new movement in Vietnam – e-scooter enthusiasts inject innovation into the country’s electrical infrastructure, pushing against frequent power outages. This is a game-changer in a country where e-scooters are everywhere and reliable electricity is not.

E-scooter riders are essentially turning their scooters into portable power stations. This ingenious solution involves mobile energy storage in the e-scooters that can be tapped during power cuts. Sounds simple, right? But it has made an enormous difference, especially for small businesses in Ho Chi Minh City, which, unlike big corporations, don’t usually have generators.

The Re:Charge project is one such initiative taking shape, led by enthusiasts of Dat Bike, a local Vietnamese e-scooter brand. While still in its early days, the initiative plans to build a widespread charging network across Vietnam. Aside from boosting the accessibility of e-scooters, this move also promises to be a boon for local businesses.

Re:Charge currently has a mere ten active participants but intends to expand this number considerably.

It has already positively impacted local businesses, including restaurants, coffee shops, tattoo parlors, and grocery stores, all of which provide free services. Fundamental to this initiative is a deep-rooted desire to contribute to their community during tough times.

And what powers these scooters? Dat Bikes use a sturdy 5kWh battery, which, when connected to a 1kW or 2kW inverter, becomes a 220V power source. A fully charged battery can work for up to four hours, enough to power lights and freezers in a small store for 3-4 hours.

The Re:Charge team intelligently utilizes social media to spread its mission and inspire more e-scooter owners to join its cause. So far, it’s made modest progress, but Dat Bikers’ early victories have illuminated electric vehicles‘ potential as feasible mobile power solutions.

Through the collaboration and ingenuity of local communities, solutions like Re:Charge show how adversity can foster unity and inspire generosity. In a world where power can be as unpredictable as the weather, communities are learning to harness it in the most unlikely places – their e-scooters. And perhaps that’s the most powerful message of all.
