Midjourney AI editor review: a deep dive

Midjourney Review
Midjourney Review

Midjourney, the AI image generation platform, has made its powerful tools accessible to everyone for free through a new web-based interface. CEO David Holz announced that anyone can now visit the website and generate up to 25 images without cost. This marks a significant change from Midjourney’s previous setup, requiring users to navigate Discord and use text-based prompts to create and refine images.

The process could be cumbersome and frustrating for many users. The new website offers a more user-friendly experience, allowing users to create an account by linking their Google or Discord credentials. Those who have previously generated images via Discord can merge their image history by linking their accounts.

Once signed in, users can explore images created by others, view instructional videos, and generate their own images using the prompt field at the top of the page. Midjourney responds by generating four different images, from which users can choose one to refine further.

The refinement options include adjustments for strength, subtlety, zooming, panning, and upscaling. Users can also revise prompts, modify specific areas, change aspect ratios, adjust scale, and add new elements for customization. The highlight of the new interface is the canvas-based image editor, which consolidates features like inpainting, outpainting, and image resizing into one powerful view.

Users can select specific areas of an image using a brush tool and alter the text prompt to change just that area. Midjourney’s web interface and editor substantially improved over the previous Discord-based process, putting all the key tools for iterating on AI image prompts at users’ fingertips. While serious artists may still prefer external tools for fine-tuned edits, the built-in editor covers the most important bases.

The new UI is slick and responsive, making the image generation process feel more like using a modern creative app. Midjourney’s move to make its tools accessible to everyone for free is a significant step towards democratizing AI-generated art and expanding the possibilities for creative expression.
