New Jersey is experiencing a rapid increase in temperatures, making it the fastest-warming state in the Northeast United States. Research highlighted by meteorologist Shel Winkley points to climate change as a significant factor in this trend. Urban areas like Trenton contribute to rising temperatures due to the heat absorption and retention by concrete and asphalt surfaces.
That only takes what would’ve been a hot day, and then we top that with the temperatures that have become hotter because of climate change,” Winkley said. Then the last layer on top of that is the urban development.”
The Jersey Shore is also facing warmer sea surface temperatures, leading to increased humidity. Winkley explained, “You have warmer sea surface temperatures that add more humidity, more moisture to the air.

That makes the temperature rise and it harder to cool down at night.”
While emphasizing the need for long-term solutions to combat climate change, such as reducing emissions, Winkley also suggested short-term measures like investing in and planting more trees. Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora stressed the importance of providing cool interior spaces for residents.
It’s really important that we open our recreation centers, our libraries, and our senior centers so folks will have a respite and they can come and find a cool place,” Gusciora said. Jean Kelly, a 91-year-old resident, found relief at the Sam Naples Community Center in Trenton. “It’s beautiful,” Kelly said.
