VMware enhances edge products for AI

Enhanced Edge

VMware has introduced several enhancements to its software-defined edge products to better support generative AI workloads. The updates expand connectivity options and improve traffic-management capabilities. The VMware VeloCloud Edge 710 appliance will now support combined fixed wireless access and satellite connections.

This feature will also be available in the new VMware VeloCloud Edge 720 and 740 appliances. Symantec points of presence will now be integrated with VMware VeloCloud SASE. VMware Edge Compute Stack, a runtime and orchestration platform, has been optimized to support AI workloads and traffic patterns.

Edge computing is increasingly pivotal in deploying AI applications. Many AI workloads, particularly autonomous ones like video inference cameras and industrial control systems, require local processing at the edge rather than centralized data centers.

Enhancing edge for AI workloads

“Edge AI encompasses everything outside of main public and private data centers,” explained Sanjay Uppal, General Manager for the software-defined edge division at Broadcom. “We have revamped our VeloCloud portfolio to enable edge AI workloads.”

Companies like Nature Fresh Farms are already leveraging these advancements. “We rely on devices at the edge – in our greenhouses and other facilities – to monitor and capture data used to keep millions of growing plants healthy,” stated Keith Bradley, Vice President for IT and Security at Nature Fresh Farms.

VMware has also integrated generative AI into its dynamic multipath optimization (DMPO) algorithm. This algorithm learns and adapts to the changing demands of edge workloads. Tal Klein, Head of Marketing for software-defined edge at Broadcom, emphasized the importance of orchestrating workloads properly to avoid disruptions in critical operations like retail video surveillance and industrial manufacturing.

As edge deployments grow, VMware’s enhanced software-defined edge offerings position the company to support the increasing demand for localized AI processing. This aligns with the broader industry trend towards decentralizing AI workloads to achieve better efficiency and performance at the edge.
