Question:
I am using MS Visual J++ 1.1 1997 and it doesn’tcontain the java.util.Calendar class and java.text.* packages that you reference in the answer to another question. How do I obtain these classes? The software that I have claims to be version 1.1, and your answer states that they are available from this verison onward.
Answer:
There is a common misconception that Visual J++ 1.1 is Java 1.1-compliant. Visual J++ 1.1 is in fact Java 1.0.2-compliant, which is why it does not contain the Calendar class and the java.text.* package, which are part of the Java 1.1 distribution. If you want to use Java 1.1 with Visual J++, you either have to get the new Visual J++ 6.0 (notice the extreme change in version number), or get the latest Microsoft SDK for Java (version 2.02 or 3.0beta). It is easy to be misled into thinking that Visual J++ 1.1 is a Java 1.1 product simply because it has the same version number.
