Exchange Event Service

Exchange Event Service

Question:
I have nine Exchange 5.5 post offices. Most started as 5.0 post offices, which were then upgraded to 5.5 with SP1.

The newer post offices have a “Microsoft Exchange Event Service” but the upgraded post offices do not. Can you tell me what this service does? It also needs to be stopped prior to stopping the information store.

Answer:
The Exchange Event Service provides server-side scripting capability to an Exchange Server and, as you correctly observed, was a new addition to Exchange 5.5. The Event Service also supports the Exchange Routing Objects often used in “Workflow-enabled” applications.

As you also observed, the Event Service is not installed by default when you upgrade a 5.0 server to 5.5.
