Introduction to ASP.NET for JSP/Servlet Developers

This session will provide a technical overview of ASP.NET 1.1, including the basic background necessary to understand ASP.NET and how ASP.NET integrates with the .NET Framework and Microsoft IIS. During the presentation, the attendee will see the high level similarities and differences between ASP.NET and JSP/Servlets. At the same time, the attendee will be introduced to the vocabulary necessary to understand the following sessions.
Topics Covered:
ASP.NET and the .NET Framework - In this segment, the presenter will present a short background section on the .NET Framework, ASP.NET and how the various .NET Languages tie into these components. The emphasis will be on showing conceptual similarities between the Java framework and the .NET Framework.
Visual Studio .NET - In this segment, the presenter will start by showing how to build an ASP.NET application from scratch without a GUI. Then the presenter will give the attendees a short tour of Visual Studio .NET 2003 with emphasis on ASP.NET development features. The primary goal of this segment is to show the various options for developing ASP.NET and compare them to similar options for developing Java Web applications.
Basic Page Design - The presenter will provide the attendees with an overview of the built in controls and features available for an ASP.NET developer. The primary goal will be to compare the standard set of components in ASP.NET with both the Java Standard Tag Library and Java Server Faces.
Data Access - Almost every Web application relies on accessing some form of data store. One of the major differences between Java Web Development and ASP.NET development lies in the tools and techniques used for accessing data. In this segment, the instructor will explain ASP.NET data access, covering both the connected and disconnected models as well as the various data grid controls. This information will be contrasted with the techniques you have to use in Java.
