I am writing a Visual Basic app that is all about a database created in Access 97 with about 500 records.
I want to be able to filter things, find things, and be able to do semi-basic database commands. Do you know if SQL is the way?

Yes SQL is the way to do all the things you mention in your posting. I think you should spend some time with the sample code to get a better idea of what you need.
