Even after adding amplifier offset and sensor tolerance, you can comfortably publish ±0.2 °C resolution for alerts. The meaningful improvements will come from shielding, reference stability, and filtering, not from jumping to a 16-bit ADC.

Capture analog data correctly, step by step

Step 1: Define the physics, not the part.
Write down the range, bandwidth, and tolerable error of the phenomenon. A door-slam vibration might need 0–2 kHz and ±5 percent amplitude, while a fermentation tank needs 0–0.01 Hz and ±0.1 °C. This decides everything else.

Step 2: Choose the sensor and front-end as a pair.
Match the sensor’s output type to your conditioning. For microvolts, use instrumentation amplifiers with high CMRR. For current loops, use precision shunts and Kelvin routing. Plan an anti-alias filter whose cutoff is just below Nyquist.

Step 3: Set sampling and resolution to the use case.
As a rule, sample at 5–10× the highest frequency you care about to buy room for filters and algorithms. Pick ADC bits so that one LSB is smaller than one-third of your smallest meaningful signal change. Overspec bits without a quiet front-end is a trap.

Step 4: Calibrate and store the recipe.
Perform at least a two-point or three-point calibration across temperature. Save the slope, offset, temperature coefficients, and firmware version next to the data so later analysis is traceable.
