Supercell has acquired all shares of Space Ape and plans to establish its first London office by spring 2025. The Finnish company confirmed that Space Ape will become part of Supercell rather than operate independently following the acquisition. Space Ape, soon to be rebranded as ‘Supercell London’, will join Supercell’s existing offices in Helsinki, Shanghai, San Francisco, and Seoul.

Supercell has been a majority investor in Space Ape since 2017, and in July 2022, it invested an additional $37 million. Currently, Space Ape is collaborating with Supercell on Hay Day, according to the announcement. The two companies had earlier worked together on a soft launch of a Boom Beach spin-off, which was discontinued in November 2022.

Supercell enters London with acquisition

Supercell CEO Ilkka Paananen commented on the acquisition: “We believe the best teams create the best games, so we are excited to find our place within London’s incredibly talented games ecosystem by joining forces with Space Ape. This move will bring in amazing new colleagues and make our game development teams even stronger.

With the best talent globally, we move faster on our mission of creating great games that as many people as possible play for years and that are remembered forever.”

Space Ape CEO John Earner added: “We’ve loved working closely with Supercell for many years, and this move marks the next stage in that partnership. I am immensely proud of Space Ape’s contributions to the gaming industry over the last twelve years. I look forward to our next step in evolution as part of the Supercell team.”

Space Ape’s games have been played by 180 million people around the world, generating more than $500 million.

Its portfolio includes titles like Beatstar, Country Star, and Chrome Valley Customs. The move marks a significant step for Supercell as it aims to leverage the talent in London, already home to over 600 game companies, to strengthen its global capabilities.
