Facebook leads the social media landscape, with TikTok, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and Snapchat rounding out the top five platforms.

Global internet patterns for 2024

Matt Prince, CEO and co-founder of Cloudflare, emphasized the company’s comprehensive view of web usage, quality, and connectivity. Internet disruptions have increased, with over 221 outages recorded globally in 2024. More than half of these outages resulted from government actions aimed at controlling civil unrest, protests, or preventing exam cheating.

Despite the challenges, the Internet’s danger level showed only a minor rise, with 6.5% of global traffic identified as potentially malicious. AI bots and crawlers like Bytespider and ClaudeBot remained active throughout the year, although their traffic levels gradually declined. David Belson, Head of Data Insight at Cloudflare, highlighted the importance of democratizing Cloudflare’s data through the Cloudflare Radar platform, which offers accessible insights into Internet trends and patterns.

The 2024 Year in Review provides a comprehensive analysis of global and regional metrics, including traffic growth, service popularity, satellite Internet usage, web technologies, and security threats. The report aims to inform decisions on security, IT priorities, and strategy in the rapidly evolving digital landscape.
