A recent survey reveals that most Americans hold unfavorable views of prominent tech executives Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg. The poll, conducted from January 27 to February 2, 2025, found that 54% of U.S. adults have a negative opinion of Musk, while 67% feel the same way about Zuckerberg. Opinions on Musk are notably divided along political lines.

While 73% of Republicans view him favorably, only 12% of Democrats share this sentiment. In contrast, 85% of Democrats hold an unfavorable view of Musk. Zuckerberg faces more consistent disapproval across the political spectrum.

Approximately 60% of Republicans and 76% of Democrats view him unfavorably, with only 34% of Republicans and 17% of Democrats expressing positive opinions. Age also plays a role in shaping perceptions.

Negative perceptions of tech leaders

Younger adults tend to have more negative views of both executives than older individuals. About 67% of adults under 30 have an unfavorable view of Musk, while 70% of the same age group hold negative opinions of Zuckerberg. The survey, conducted by the Pew Research Center, involved 5,086 participants in the American Trends Panel, representing a national, random sampling of residential addresses.

The results were weighted to represent the U.S. adult population by various demographic factors. These findings shed light on the evolving public perceptions of two influential figures in the tech industry. The widespread awareness of Musk and Zuckerberg, with only 3% and 6% of U.S. adults unsure about who they are, respectively, highlights the role of social media in shaping their reputations.

The negative sentiments towards these CEOs may be attributed to various factors, including their constant presence in news cycles, public sentiment towards wealth and success, and Americans’ mixed feelings about the social media platforms they lead. As technology continues to intersect with public policy and mainstream culture, the debate over the appropriate level of influence for private individuals like Musk and Zuckerberg will likely intensify. The poll results underscore the ongoing concerns among the public about the balance of power and the role of influential figures in shaping the future of governance and society.
