Thousands of people across the United States participated in “Hands Off” protests against President Donald Trump and Elon Musk on Saturday. The demonstrations were held in more than 1,200 locations, from small towns to big cities and state capitols. Protesters carried signs, flags, and even a large balloon with an image of President Trump.
They marched and rallied in places like Los Angeles, Miami, Houston, Tucson, Portsmouth, Huntington Beach, Lansing, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Asheville, New York City, Columbia, Atlanta, and Boston. Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts joined the march in his state. The nationwide protests showed strong public sentiment against the policies and actions of President Trump and Elon Musk.
Protesters shared their visions of an “ideal America” in interviews. One masked protester said an ideal America is where people can protest and have their voices heard, not where someone has “taken over the country” and doesn’t allow free speech. Josh from Queens said in an ideal America, citizens can live in peace and prosperity, exercise their rights, and everyone is housed, fed, and makes a fair wage.
Nationwide hands-off demonstrations escalate.
He hopes the protest helps organize working-class people. May, a Manhattan resident, said her ideal America includes diversity, women’s rights, and peace.
Mary from Queens added civil rights, gay rights, food and healthcare for all, and a “helping attitude” toward other countries. Yalena, originally from Ukraine, said that America gives more rights to underprivileged people. Wendy, a New Jersey professor, said everyone should have a social safety net and make a living wage.
The protests featured many creative and impactful handmade signs. Demonstrators gathered in places like Novi, Michigan; Huntington Beach and Riverside, California; Chicago; Los Angeles; Seattle; Atlanta; Washington, D.C.; and New York City. The signs and protests highlighted concerns over issues like the federal workforce, trade policies, and broader opposition to the Trump administration’s approach to governing.
The “Hands Off” demonstrations were seen as the most extensive nationwide display of opposition since Trump took office.
