Elon Musk’s political maneuvering has helped secure the future of his social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. Although his tactics are controversial and the long-term viability of X remains uncertain, a new injection of funding has kept the platform solvent for now. Musk’s interest in Twitter began in 2019 when Tesla sought access to Bolivia’s lithium resources.

Amid political upheaval, Bolivian President Evo Morales was overthrown in a coup, which U.S. operatives allegedly supported through activities on Twitter. This event reportedly demonstrated to Musk the power of Twitter as a tool for political and market influence. By April 2022, Musk had acquired a significant amount of Twitter stock, positioning himself for a controlling role.

He quickly enacted cost-cutting measures, such as mass layoffs and office closures, and aligned the platform’s policies with his political viewpoints, particularly those of the Republican Party.

Funding boosts X’s uncertain future

After Trump’s re-election in 2024, Musk’s political influence became more pronounced.

His new role in the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has allowed him to pressure advertisers into renewed deals with X, under the implicit threat of regulatory repercussions from the Trump administration. Moreover, Musk has pursued interests in artificial intelligence through his xAI project. Created in response to a personal vendetta against OpenAI, xAI aims to offer a “non-woke” alternative in the AI landscape.

The financial intertwinement of xAI and X means that the AI project’s success provides a financial cushion for X, further stabilizing the social media platform’s future. Elon Musk’s blend of political clout and business acumen has temporarily saved X from insolvency. Yet this success comes with ethical dilemmas and significant risks, leaving the platform’s future hanging in the balance.

For now, Musk’s maneuvers have bought X more time, showcasing the complicated and often controversial interplay between business and politics in the digital age.
