Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has reached out to Elon Musk, CEO of xAI, suggesting they put their differences aside and work together on achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI). This comes after a period of public disagreements and a complex history between the two industry leaders who co-founded OpenAI. The recent exchange took place on Twitter.

It started when Musk quoted a tweet from Y Combinator co-founder Paul Graham, praising Altman’s efforts. Altman responded, acknowledging past mistakes, “We were both wrong, or at least I certainly was 🤷‍♂️ but that was from 2016, and this was from 2022.”

This marks a significant change from the rivalry that has characterized their relationship in recent years. In 2018, Musk left OpenAI and later criticized the company’s direction, especially its close relationship with Microsoft.

Musk worried about OpenAI becoming a “closed source, maximum-profit company effectively controlled by Microsoft.

In 2023, Musk founded xAI, which launched the rival chatbot Grok, directly competing with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Collaborating for AGI progress

Musk also filed multiple lawsuits against OpenAI regarding its ties to Microsoft and its for-profit restructuring.

These actions indicated a serious divide between the two tech giants. But the situation appears to be changing. Altman proposed in his tweet that the feud should not hinder progress toward AGI: “Anyway, see you next week, let’s be friends 🥺 👉👈 AGI is too important to let a little feud get in the way.

This call for peace comes at a time when both Musk and Altman have been influential figures in the AI and tech industry, with strong connections to important government projects.

Musk had been a supporter of former President Donald Trump and was named head of the Department of Government Efficiency. Meanwhile, Altman has been involved in the $500 billion Project Stargate, which aims to develop AI infrastructure in the U.S.

Amid recent pressure from AI experts, former employees, and state attorney generals, OpenAI had announced the spin-off of its for-profit arm as a public benefit corporation while keeping the non-profit’s control over it. The world is watching to see if these two visionaries can join forces and accelerate progress in AGI, potentially transforming the future of artificial intelligence.
