Tesla reported a 14% decline in vehicle deliveries for the second quarter of 2025, marking the second straight year-over-year drop. The company delivered 384,000 vehicles from April through June, down from 444,000 a year earlier. Tesla’s limited and aging lineup has struggled to withstand growing competition from young Chinese automakers like BYD and established Western companies such as General Motors, Volkswagen, and BMW.
CEO Elon Musk has been focused on autonomous driving technology rather than developing new models to attract car buyers. He believes the company’s future lies in self-driving capabilities that will allow Teslas to operate as driverless taxis.
Tesla announced its 2Q delivery numbers this morning which came in at 384k vehicles well above Street whisper numbers of ~365k vehicles, which was better than feared as the company saw success with its Model Y refresh cycle in the quarter. China rebound. Big step forward 🔥🏆🐂

Last month, Tesla began testing its self-driving technology with specially equipped Model Y SUVs offering paid rides to handpicked guests in Austin, Texas.
“The jabs between Musk and Trump will continue as the Budget rolls through Congress but Tesla investors want Musk to focus on driving Tesla and stop this political angle which has turned into a life of its own since the elections,” Dan Ives wrotehttps://t.co/Ww2e51p39j @nypost

tesla faces sales slump
The guest riders, mostly Tesla enthusiasts, posted positive reviews online, but videos revealed some flaws in the technology. In another milestone, a Tesla with no occupants drove itself from the company’s factory in Austin to a customer about half an hour away.
Critics pointed out that the car parked at the destination in a fire lane marked “No Parking.”

Tesla cited increased competition from Chinese EV manufacturers offering newer and more affordable models, as well as political backlash against Musk, as factors contributing to the decline in sales. The company reported total deliveries of 384,122 vehicles and total production of 410,244 vehicles for Q2 2025. Wall Street analysts had expected deliveries of around 387,000.
Tesla shares fell more than 5% on Tuesday, closing at $300.71, and were down about 26% for the year. The company will discuss its second-quarter financial results with investors on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, after markets close.
