Gautam Adani, the chairperson of the Adani Group, recently met with Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk and Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay in Thimphu. During these meetings, Adani discussed several key initiatives and signed a deal for a new hydro power plant. Adani expressed his admiration for the King’s vision for Bhutan and the ambitious eco-friendly masterplan for Gelephu Mindfulness City.

This plan includes the establishment of large computing centers and data facilities. Adani shared his excitement to collaborate on these transformative initiatives and contribute to green energy management in Bhutan, a carbon-negative nation. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Adani stated, “Honoured to meet His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk of Bhutan.

During his meeting with Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, Adani announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bhutan’s Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) for the construction of a 570 MW green hydro plant in Chukha province. He commended the Prime Minister’s Office for advancing the King’s vision and pursuing broad-ranging infrastructure initiatives across the kingdom.

Adani expressed his eagerness to work closely with Bhutan on hydro and other infrastructure projects. The new hydro plant is expected to benefit Adani Green Energy, the renewable energy arm of the Adani Group, which currently has 47 gigawatts of installed hydro power capacity and aims to increase this to 59 gigawatts by the end of the decade. This visit follows a previous meeting in November last year, where Adani had expressed his admiration for King Wangchuk’s vision and discussed opportunities for his conglomerate to contribute to green infrastructure development in Bhutan.
