Apple plans to introduce its first Apple Watch with 5G network support and satellite messaging capabilities this year. The new Apple Watch Ultra model will enable users to stay connected even in areas without traditional mobile signal coverage. According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, Apple will switch its data modem suppliers for the Apple Watch next year, transitioning from Intel to MediaTek modems.
These new modems will feature 5G RedCap support, a simplified version of 5G designed for devices with lower performance requirements, such as wearables. 5G RedCap provides lower bandwidth and data rates, resulting in lower power consumption and reduced manufacturing costs while offering essential 5G features like low latency. With this technology, the Apple Watch Ultra will join the rest of Apple’s product lineup in supporting 5G, signaling the company’s complete transition to this advanced connectivity technology.
The introduction of satellite messaging capabilities in the Apple Watch Ultra will allow users to send texts when cellular and Wi-Fi networks are out of range, similar to the feature first introduced with the iPhone 14.
Apple Watch Ultra gains satellite messaging
This feature is expected to be a key selling point for the third-generation Ultra, positioning the device to better compete with brands like Garmin, which offer satellite-equipped gear for remote and rugged environments.
Designed for adventurers, divers, and hikers, the Ultra will gain a new safety edge with off-grid communication capabilities. Apple is expected to offer free satellite access for the Ultra, as it currently does for supporting iPhones, which include two years of coverage. While the new 5G technology is expected to enhance mobile data speeds, it is unlikely to significantly impact the user experience for typical Apple Watch activities.
However, Apple may develop features that leverage the benefits of 5G RedCap in the future. The forthcoming Apple Watch Ultra with 5G and satellite SMS support reflects Apple’s commitment to enhancing its wearable technology lineup and ensuring its devices remain at the forefront of innovation. Stay tuned for more updates on the official release date and additional features.
