China’s greenhouse gas emissions were essentially flat this year, recording either no increase or a tiny one, according to a report from the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA). A third of experts surveyed by the report believe that China’s coal emissions may have already peaked. Lauri Myllyvirta, the co-founder and lead analyst at CREA, discusses China’s emissions trajectory and its continued investments in coal power alongside substantial growth in solar and wind energy.

Myllyvirta explained that while China’s GDP growth has been significant, its energy intensity has not decreased since 2020. Jesse Jenkins highlighted two key factors: the growth rate of new clean energy supplies, particularly in the electricity sector, and the pace of demand growth. He mentions that the global energy transition seems more like energy addition, where new clean energy meets growth but doesn’t necessarily reduce emissions.

Another significant factor is the construction industry’s slowdown, which impacts cement and steel consumption – major emission contributors. While China’s GDP growth target is around 4.5% to 4.7% this year, slower growth in the construction sector might reduce emissions related to these materials.

In a separate context, the struggle over renewable energy is picking up steam in the U.S. Particularly in Oklahoma, where there is a nascent effort to ban new renewable energy projects. Despite the state’s significant contributions to wind and solar energy, a rally was held in Oklahoma City, urging the governor to halt new green energy facilities. Whether China’s emissions have peaked remains a complex issue intertwined with economic growth, energy demand, and industrial activity.

While clean energy is expanding, the balance with continued coal use and sectoral shifts will determine the country’s future emission trends. Meanwhile, in the U.S., the transition to renewable energy faces its own set of challenges and opposition despite growing successes.
