India and Pakistan have agreed to a ceasefire after days of intense fighting and exchanges of fire. The announcement came on Saturday, with both countries agreeing to a full and immediate halt to hostilities. The ceasefire was brokered with the help of U.S. diplomacy, according to Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

However, tensions remain high, with India accusing Pakistan of violating the ceasefire soon after the agreement was reached. The recent escalation in violence began after a deadly militant attack in Indian-controlled Kashmir on April 22, known as the Pahalgam incident. The attack left 26 people dead, and India blamed Pakistan for the violence, a claim that Pakistan denies.

The conflict between India and Pakistan over Kashmir dates back to 1947, when the two countries gained independence from British rule. Kashmir, a Muslim-majority region, has been a point of contention ever since, with both countries claiming the entire territory. Religious and nationalist sentiments continue to fuel the conflict, with strong Hindu nationalist sentiment in India and Muslim sentiment in Pakistan.

India and Pakistan agree to ceasefire

The two countries have fought several wars and battles over Kashmir since gaining independence. The situation is further complicated by the fact that both India and Pakistan possess nuclear weapons, with each having between 160 and 170 weapons.

The two countries are among a handful that have never signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Another potential flashpoint in the conflict is water. Following the April 22 attack, India suspended a key water treaty with Pakistan regarding the Indus River.

Experts warn that if India restricts the flow of water to Pakistan, it could be grounds for war. Despite the ceasefire agreement, the wider issue over Kashmir may not be resolved in the immediate future. Previous attempts at negotiating a lasting peace have been hindered by instability in Pakistan’s leadership.

As the world watches, the fragile peace between these two nuclear-armed neighbors hangs in the balance. The hope is that the ceasefire will hold and that a more permanent resolution to the long-standing dispute over Kashmir can be found.
