Intel announced new chips at the Computex 2024 conference in Taiwan on Tuesday. The company is trying to catch up to rivals Nvidia and AMD in the booming artificial intelligence industry.

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger showcased the Xeon 6 processor, which delivers better performance and power efficiency for high-intensity data center workloads.

The chip comes six months after Intel introduced products for data centers and two months after announcing solutions for AI model training and deployment. The company also revealed that its Gaudi 2 and Gaudi 3 AI accelerators offer lower costs than rival chips. “Customers seek high-performance, cost-effective gen AI training and inferencing solutions.
And they’ve started to turn to alternatives like Gaudi,” Gelsinger said. Intel announced architecture details for its upcoming Lunar Lake processors, which are expected to ship in the third quarter.

These processors will compete against Nvidia’s and AMD’s chips designed for AI PCs. Unlike Nvidia and AMD, Intel not only designs its chips but also manufactures them. However, its foundry business has been struggling, recording a decline in 2023.
Nearly $50 billion in federal funding from the Biden administration could help Intel advance its semiconductor manufacturing, research, and development. Intel targets customers beyond hyper scalers like Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Meta, and Tesla, including healthcare, research institutes, and the automotive industry. This could position Intel well in areas outside of the core AI platform builders.
Despite these advancements, Nvidia still has a significant software and hardware integration advantage. It will take time for companies to break through Nvidia’s stronghold. While Intel’s announcements are significant, they are not expected to alter the market landscape dominated by Nvidia drastically.
