Israeli strikes extend Gaza communications blackout

The Gaza Strip continues to face a telecommunications blackout as Israeli strikes hamper repair efforts.

Internet and landline services remain disrupted in several parts of the territory, including Gaza City and the northern governorates, according to the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority. The outage has persisted for more than three days in the southern and central areas of Gaza, leaving many residents cut off from communication.

Technical teams are working to restore services, but repeated Israeli attacks on critical infrastructure have severely hampered their efforts.

This marks the tenth time Israel has cut off communications in Gaza since the start of the ongoing conflict on October 7, 2023. The Government Media Office in Gaza released a statement emphasizing that this was a deliberate act aimed at isolating the territory from the outside world and concealing the truth.

The media office warned that such blackouts seriously hinder the work of medical and emergency teams, preventing them from reaching the dead and wounded. “Many of those injured may have been left to bleed to death without any chance of rescue,” the statement said.

The disruption of communications and internet services is seen as a violation of international humanitarian law. It reveals the oppressive nature of the occupation, which uses technology as a tool to strangle an entire population. Last week, internet and landline services were utterly cut off in Gaza for nearly five days. Since the beginning of the Israeli aggression on October 7, 2023, communication and internet services have been disrupted multiple times across the Strip or in large parts of it, either due to intense Israeli bombardment or the depletion of fuel required to operate power generators.

The situation continues to hamper daily life and communication efforts within Gaza, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis. Efforts are ongoing to restore these vital services, which are critical for both emergency response and day-to-day life.
