Janet Petro has made history by becoming the first woman to lead NASA and the Kennedy Space Center. President Donald Trump appointed her as the acting NASA administrator on January 20, his first day back in office. Petro was born in Michigan in 1960.
Her interest in space began at a young age, influenced by her father’s work with Chrysler on NASA projects. This led her family to move to Florida, where she watched Gemini and Apollo missions launch from the beach. Petro graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1981 with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.
She then served in the army, flying helicopters in Germany. After leaving the military, she worked in engineering and management roles in the private sector. In 1988, she earned a master’s degree in business administration from Boston University.
In 2007, Petro became the deputy director of the Kennedy Space Center.
Petro’s historic leadership at NASA
She said in an interview, “I was deeply, deeply honored.” On June 30, 2021, she made history again when she was appointed as the center’s first woman director.
As NASA’s acting administrator, Petro has already made some changes. She emailed staff to inform them that the agency was closing all Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) offices. This was in response to an executive order from President Trump.
“These programs divided Americans by race, wasted taxpayer dollars, and resulted in shameful discrimination,” Petro reportedly wrote in a memo. Petro has appointed Michael Altenhofen as her senior advisor. This comes amid concerns about the growing influence of companies like SpaceX on NASA, given Elon Musk’s close ties to President Trump.
Petro is expected to serve as acting administrator until Jared Isaacman, Trump’s nominee to lead NASA, is confirmed by the Senate. Isaacman is a billionaire and private astronaut who has flown on SpaceX spacecraft. As the first woman to hold NASA’s top job, Petro is making history and paving the way for future generations.
Her leadership will shape the agency’s priorities and programs in the coming years.
