Jenna Ortega explains terrifying Twitter deletion

Terrifying Deletion

Jenna Ortega has revealed she deleted her Twitter account after receiving AI-generated explicit images of herself as a child. The actress spoke about the disturbing experience ahead of the second season of her show. “I hate AI,” Ortega said.

“AI could be used for incredible things. I saw something recently where AI was able to detect breast cancer four years before it progressed. That’s beautiful, let’s keep it to that.

But did I like being 14, making a Twitter account because I was supposed to, and seeing dirty edited content of me as a child? No.

Jenna’s distress over AI misuse

It’s terrifying.

It’s corrupt. It’s wrong.”

Ortega explained that the first DM she opened by herself at age 12 was “an unsolicited photo of a man’s genitals, and that was just the beginning.” She continued, “I was told that I had to build my image using Twitter. I ended up deleting it about two or three years ago because after my show came out, the influx of absurd images and photos increased.

I was in a confused state and I just deleted it.”

The actress added, “It was disgusting, it made me feel bad and uncomfortable. One day I woke up and thought, ‘I don’t need this anymore,’ so I dropped it.”

The barriers to making realistic AI porn, called deepfake pornography, are lower than ever and are of particular concern to women, who are often targeted and harassed with manipulated imagery. Despite the growing problem, laws regulating AI usage have lagged behind.

Ortega, who is soon to star in an adaptation of Klara and the Sun as the eponymous robot, described her experience with AI as “terrifying.” She reflected on growing up in the spotlight and navigating her identity as a young woman in Hollywood.
