Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed that 20% to 30% of the company’s code is generated by artificial intelligence. He shared this information during a fireside chat with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg at Meta’s LlamaCon conference on Tuesday. Nadella highlighted that the AI’s effectiveness varied depending on the programming language.
More progress has been made in languages like Python, while others like C++ have seen less advancement. When Nadella asked Zuckerberg about the extent of AI-generated code at Meta, Zuckerberg admitted he was unsure about the exact figures. However, he stated that Meta aims for AI to handle half its software development tasks within the following year.
This shift towards AI-generated code aligns with recent comments from other industry leaders. Google CEO Sundar Pichai mentioned on an earnings call that AI plays a role in their code generation process, although exact percentages were not provided.
AI’s growing impact on coding
The increasing use of AI in software development represents a significant trend in the tech industry. It has the potential to accelerate software production and reduce deployment time. As AI technology continues to evolve, its role in coding is expected to grow.
The current percentages shared by tech leaders may serve as a baseline for future advancements in this field. Integrating AI into the coding process is seen as a way for organizations to produce more software of higher quality at a faster rate, which could drive innovation forward in the industry.
However, the shift towards AI-driven coding has also led to layoffs among human software engineers. According to layoff-tracker data, over 51,000 tech employees have been laid off at 112 companies so far this year, indicating substantial changes in the tech industry’s workforce dynamics.
