Metronet, a fiber optic communication service provider, is experiencing widespread outages across the United States. The outages have impacted over 500,000 customers, leaving them without internet access. Reports of the outage began around 1 a.m., with nearly 5,000 people experiencing connection issues.
By 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday, the number had surged to more than 12,000 people nationwide. The largest outages in Iowa appear to be concentrated in central and southwestern regions. Other metropolitan areas including Minneapolis, Chicago, and St.
Louis also reported significant impacts. Metronet operates in numerous Iowa communities, including Ames, Bettendorf, Cedar Falls, Davenport, Des Moines, Mason City, Sioux City, Urbandale, Waterloo, and West Des Moines, among several others. As of now, the company has not provided any information regarding the cause of the outages.
The website is also down, displaying a “403 Forbidden” error, which means that access to the page is denied, often due to permission issues on the server. Users on social media have expressed their frustration over the lack of communication from Metronet regarding the ongoing issues. Some have pointed out the irony of the outage occurring just after National Internet Day on October 29.
Writing on Reddit, one user from Lafayette said: “My neighbor and I are both Metronet customers and both of our internet connections went down around 3am EST.
Metronet outage impacts metro areas
Anyone else experiencing a total outage?” Other users confirmed outages in Michigan, Iowa, Florida, and Virginia.
Metronet has just started to post on social media, offering an apology to customers for what many have described as “radio silence” following the widespread outage earlier today. While service has been restored in most locations, some users are still reporting ongoing issues. In Florida, users are still dealing with disruptions as the service remains down, sparking frustration for those relying on Metronet.
Elsewhere, reports show the service has returned, with many users back online. However, the ongoing issues in Florida mean not all customers are out of the woods yet. As customers wake up and prepare for work, the service remains completely down for some, leaving users increasingly anxious about the impact on their day.
A Reddit user said: “Absolutely insane that in 2024 a full service outage goes on for 3+ hours on a business day. Presumably since their whole network is down their business customers are down too. It’s actually wild that it isn’t fixed with the work day starting.
Even more wild that Metronet is the best ISP where I live.”
Reports continue to indicate that Metronet is experiencing widespread outages, impacting a significant number of customers across the United States. The company has not yet released any further information regarding the cause of the outages. For the latest updates, customers are advised to stay tuned to Metronet’s social media channels and official communications.
