Musk’s election falsehoods viewed 2 billion times

Elon Musk’s misleading claims about the 2024 presidential election have been viewed more than 2 billion times on X, the social media platform he owns, according to a new analysis from a nonprofit tracking misinformation. The Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) found that Musk, who endorsed former President Donald Trump in July, has posted numerous falsehoods about the upcoming election. The CCDH’s research is based on publicly available data from X.

It analyzed Musk’s posts and spending by political campaigns on the platform. The nonprofit identified 87 specific posts from Musk containing debunked false claims about the 2024 election. These posts have been viewed more than 2 billion times.

Musk’s baseless assertions include claims that undocumented immigrants are voting en masse in U.S. elections for Democrats. Despite being debunked by fact-checkers and media outlets, such claims have continued to spread. A spokesperson for X did not respond to a request for comment on the new data.

CCDH founder Imran Ahmed emphasized the scale of Musk’s influence, describing X under Musk’s leadership as a “perpetual disinformation machine.” Ahmed argued that Musk’s actions are a significant misuse of a powerful communication tool, particularly as the 2024 presidential election approaches. This election cycle is the first with Musk at the helm of the platform, following his takeover two years ago. Analysts and critics are concerned about the potential impact of unchecked misinformation on the election’s integrity.

In addition to spreading disinformation, Musk has expressed hostility towards the CCDH, calling the group a “criminal organization” and suing it last year. However, the lawsuit was dismissed by a federal judge who noted that the litigation appeared aimed at retaliating against the CCDH’s critiques. As the U.S. heads into a contentious election season, the role of social media in shaping public perception and spreading misinformation remains a critical issue.

Musk’s actions on X underscore the challenges facing election officials and the broader public in addressing and countering false narratives.

Musk’s election content sparks misinformation

Election officials in key battleground states are facing significant challenges from Musk’s misinformation.

Officials in states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Arizona have reported struggling to counter the wave of falsehoods propagated by Musk on his X platform. Stephen Richer, a top election official in Arizona’s Maricopa County, stated that efforts to correct misinformation in real-time have largely failed. Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson echoed these concerns, recounting an instance where she countered one of Musk’s claims about registered voters in Michigan on social media, only to have Musk accuse her of lying to the public.

“The bottom line is it’s really disappointing that someone with as many resources and as big of a platform as he clearly has would use those resources and allow that platform to be misused to spread misinformation,” Benson said. Renée DiResta, an expert in disinformation and an associate research professor at Georgetown University, highlighted the structural disadvantages faced by election officials. “Their job is to be election officials, not to be Tweeters,” she said.

If no algorithm is going to boost your content in any way but it is boosting the content of prominent people who are deeply suspicious of elections and tweeting conspiracy theories, you’re at a structural disadvantage.

This week, Musk encouraged his followers to report election irregularities to an “Election Integrity Community” on X, administered by Musk’s America PAC, which supports Trump’s campaign. The feed included some election claims that have already been debunked by state officials. In Pennsylvania, election officials are creating a “paper trail” to document that various claims have been debunked, in case they appear in post-election legal challenges, similar to those seen in 2020.

“Elon Musk is a huge problem,” said one Pennsylvania election official, recognizing the difficulty of combating his misinformation. Among Democrats on Capitol Hill, there is concern that social media platforms are unprepared for the deluge of misinformation before and after Election Day. Sen. Mark Warner, a Virginia Democrat who chairs the intelligence committee, voiced concerns at a September hearing about the platforms’ readiness.

As the country approaches a highly contentious election, experts argue that Musk’s influential social media platform, X, is a significant source of election-related misinformation. Federal officials and various misinformation watchdogs have raised concerns about misleading narratives that have proliferated on the platform, ranging from unsubstantiated claims about voter fraud to conspiracy theories about the integrity of the electoral process. In response to these concerns, some advocates are calling for increased regulatory oversight of social media platforms, while others argue that the onus is on the platforms themselves to establish stricter guidelines and more robust fact-checking mechanisms.

Musk has yet to directly address these concerns in public statements, maintaining a stance on promoting free speech while acknowledging the complex challenges associated with governing online content.
