Perplexity unveils AI election information hub

Perplexity, an AI startup, took a risky bet on election night by offering real-time information and maps powered by data from Democracy Works and the Associated Press. While other AI chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini opted not to answer election-related questions, Perplexity’s approach paid off. The startup’s election hub became a destination, featuring visual election charts with state-by-state data that updated every minute.

CEO Aravind Srinivas acknowledged and quickly addressed some bugs in the map throughout the night. When asked about the presidential race, Perplexity provided mostly accurate information, displaying relatively few inaccuracies compared to other AI chatbots. Despite some hallucinations, the startup generally stayed accurate, offering users a mostly reliable source of real-time election information.

This election was the first to prominently feature AI chatbots as an information source, but it will not be the last. As well-funded AI startups continue to develop, accuracy will be a key factor in their success.

Perplexity’s election information updates

So far, Perplexity has an early lead in this space. Google and OpenAI are taking a cautious approach to the election, restricting responses for election-related queries on their AI interfaces. In contrast, Perplexity is offering live updates featuring data from The Associated Press and a partnership with the nonprofit voter guidance site Democracy Works.

Perplexity’s detailed, transparent source citations go beyond what is seen in ChatGPT Search, Google’s Gemini, or Google’s AI Overviews. However, some reports have found that Perplexity’s AI-generated summaries about candidates, their policies, and endorsements contained factual errors. AI-generated images portraying Americans making political endorsements have gotten millions of interactions on Facebook, according to research conducted by the nonprofit Center for Countering Digital Hate.

These posts, often managed by users based outside the US, have propagated fake news and false claims about the upcoming election. As AI continues to play a larger role in disseminating information, the stakes are high for companies like Perplexity to deliver trustworthy and authoritative insights. While Perplexity’s push into providing election-related information is a risk, it could be a game-changer for easy-to-access election data if the company can gain the trust of its users.
