Republicans in the House of Representatives have asked their party leaders for help in responding to questions from their constituents about recent federal job cuts. The cuts were made by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which is led by Elon Musk. In a closed-door meeting on Tuesday, several Republican lawmakers said they wanted more involvement in the DOGE process.

They want to make sure federal workers are treated fairly, even as they support efforts to reduce the size of the government. Rep. Austin Scott of Georgia spoke out against comments by Musk that referred to people who rely on federal programs as “parasites.” Scott has family members who work for the federal government.

He said that while he supports making the government more efficient, the requests from DOGE should have been coordinated with federal agencies first. House Speaker Mike Johnson acknowledged that the process of cutting federal jobs will be improved over time. He said there is no playbook or precedent for how to do it.

Thom Tillis of North Carolina both said that federal employees need to be treated with respect and dignity.

Tillis, whose state has many federal research grants and workers, said that if mistakes are made in the process, they should be admitted and corrected. Rep. Rich McCormick of Georgia is facing pressure from his constituents because his district is near the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, which has had layoffs.

He said he wants to see the cuts done in a deliberate way that everyone agrees on. Rep. Nicole Malliotakis of New York questioned the decision to potentially fire federal employees via Twitter without a thorough review by Cabinet officials.

Other Republicans have also asked for more information to give to their constituents, without openly criticizing the cuts. Despite some criticism, Rep. Kevin Hern, who is part of the House Republican leadership, said he still supports the DOGE effort.
