Samsung unveils Health SDK Suite for developers

Yesterday, Samsung introduced a new way for developers to build functionality for its health-tracking features. The Samsung Health Software Development Kit (SDK) Suite opens access to the information gathered through Samsung devices, enhancing the potential of their health applications. The Suite is broken into four parts: the Sensor SDK, the Data SDK, the Accessory SDK, and the Research Stack.

The Sensor SDK allows developers to utilize the BioActive Sensor algorithm on the Galaxy Watch, updating how it tracks data. It provides continuous access to advanced functionality for the first time, including infrared and Red LED data, enabling more detailed measurements of health indicators like muscle mass and body composition. The Data SDK is particularly significant as it leverages data gathered from various Samsung devices, such as smartphones and other health gadgets.

It helps developers measure the metrics recorded by the Samsung Health app, translating the information into actionable stats.

Samsung’s SDK for advanced health insights

The Accessory SDK lets developers integrate data gathered from third-party devices, including exercise bikes, heart rate monitors, and glucose monitors.

This integration not only streamlines data access but also consolidates all information within a single ecosystem. The final part of the Suite, the Research Stack, is an open-source project. Its forthcoming update will connect data from the sensors directly to the Health SDK Suite, providing researchers with valuable insights.

While these SDKs are designed for developers rather than independent app creators, the enhanced functionality could significantly improve the user experience for Galaxy Watch users. Instead of resulting in independent apps, it’s more likely that Samsung will incorporate these enhancements into future device iterations. This release marks a significant step forward in health technology, promising more advanced health-tracking capabilities and deeper insights for developers and researchers alike.
