Unity CEO Matt Bromberg is on a mission to rebuild the company’s reputation and restore developer goodwill. In a recent interview, he spoke candidly about Unity’s challenges and his vision for the future. Bromberg took over as CEO during a tumultuous time for Unity.

His predecessor, John Riccitiello, left behind a legacy marred by controversial decisions and unpopular policies, including a proposed runtime fee for developers, which led to an uproar in the gaming community. One of my first decisions as CEO was to walk back the runtime fee to regain developer trust,” Bromberg said. Unity was in crisis mode, and the communication around this change was poorly managed, leading to a revolt among developers.”

Bromberg also criticized the metaverse, a platform championed by many as the next big thing in digital interaction.

“I was never a massive believer in the metaverse during that period of time,” he stated.

Unity’s new focus under Bromberg

“As a game maker, I experienced all those new platforms and just thought they were garbage.”

Despite the challenges, Bromberg remains optimistic about Unity’s future.

He believes the company’s focus on providing a comprehensive platform that supports the entire lifecycle of game development positions it uniquely in the market. Unity is not just a game engine provider but also a platform crucial for live services and monetization,” Bromberg explained. We are exploring other markets beyond gaming, such as automotive and manufacturing, where our technology can be applied.

Bromberg countered the notion that artificial intelligence (AI) is to blame for the recent layoffs in the gaming industry.

I actually don’t think that any of the layoffs we’re seeing in gaming are driven by AI,” he said. “If they gain efficiencies in making games, I think they’ll make more games.”

Bromberg envisions a future where human creators leverage AI-powered tools to enhance creativity and production. “Human creators will be at the core of game creation, using a platform supported by specialized AI agents in physics, sound, I.O., etc.,” he explained.

“We aim to be at the center of this, providing the necessary platform.”

As Unity navigates this crucial period under new leadership, Bromberg’s actions to refocus the company and address past missteps aim to ensure it remains a vital player in the gaming world and beyond.
