At yesterday’s “Back to the Mac” event, Steve Jobs offered a sneak peak at the latest version of OS X, codenamed “Lion.” Among the OS’s new features is a Mac App Store that brings the familiar functionality of the mobile App Store for the iPad and iPhone to the desktop.

Analysts say this will mean big changes for software developers, putting traditional software developers into competition with app creators. “Apple’s move changes how anyone thinks about software,” said Forrester’s Sarah Rotman Epps. “There’s no such thing as software anymore. It’s now all apps, and it no longer comes in boxes. It’s downloadable.”
