Developers can now access the “golden master” version of iOS 4.2, and the upgrade will likely become available for users to download within a week or two. The new operating system adds a number of features, including new controls for the multi-tasking bar and a return of the AirPlay features.

The new release will be particularly important for the iPad, which previously ran on iOS 3.2.2. That meant the device lacked multitasking, folders and several other features available on the iPhone.
