Hadoop has put large scale data processing within the reach of more companies, but it still requires a fairly knowledgeable technical staff in order to make it work. However, EMC’s announcement that it is open sourcing some of the code for its Greenplum could change that. EMC offers visual programming tools that could eventually put Hadoop-like capabilities in the hands of business analysts who don’t have an engineering background.

For now though, Hadoop still faces little competition, as most of the Greenplum code is still closed and the part that is open is only free for non-production use.
