Gartner: Symbian Is Still the Number One Smartphone Platform

Two leading market research firms disagree about which mobile OS has the most users. Canalys said Android took the top spot during the fourth quarter of 2010, but Gartner says Symbian is in first place with 37.6 percent of the market. Both firms agree, however, that Android is growing fast. In fact, Gartner says the platform’s shipments grew 888.8 percent during the year to reach 67 million units sold.

According to Gartner, RIM was in third place for the quarter with a 16.0 percent share of the market. Next came Apple’s iOS at 15.7 percent and Microsoft at 4.2 percent.
