Unnamed sources “close to the deal” tell GigaOm that VMware and parent company EMC are planning to spin off several of cloud computing assets into a separate company. The newly formed company would include Cloud Foundry, which is VMware’s platform as a service division, as well as Project Rubicon, an EMC/VMware joint venture designed to develop an infrastructure as a service offering. In addition, the new company would own EMC’s Greenplum Big Data software, Chorus analytics software and two Hadoop distributions.
The sources say VMware might announce the spin-off when it reports quarterly earnings on July 23, or it might wait until VMworld in August.
