On Wednesday, the Apache Foundation released version 2.0 of the open source NoSQL database Cassandra. Jonathan Ellis, Apache Cassandra’s VP, noted that the five-year-old database, which was originally created by Facebook, “has grown into one of the most widely used NoSQL databases in the world and serves as the backbone for some of today’s most popular applications.”

The new release is designed to make it easier to transition to NoSQL from relational databases. Key features include the following:

  • CQL (Cassandra Query Language) enhancements
  • Simplified integration with event-driven frameworks
  • Eager retries to avoid query timeouts
  • Custom Thrift server implementation
