A new report from EvansData spotlights the growing importance of APIs to developers worldwide. The Developer Population and Demographics Study finds that there are 18.2 million software developers in the world and that 1.2 million of them publish APIs for external use. A much larger number—8.9 million—publish only internal APIs.
“The Internet of Things and the proliferation of platforms across all industries have led to an explosion in the number of developers publishing APIs externally,” stated Evans Data CEO Janel Garvin. “We expect that number to increase proportionately in relation to the population going into the next three years, and not just keep up with projected population growth.”
The researchers forecast that the worldwide population of developers will hit 26.4 million by 2019, with very large increases in China and India.
