Bridgit Mendler: From Disney Star to Space Tech CEO

Disney Star CEO

Bridgit Mendler, famous for her roles in Disney Channel’s “Good Luck Charlie” and “Lemonade Mouth”, has taken the helm as CEO and co-founder of Northwood Space. A transition from acting to tech entrepreneurship that highlights her versatility.

Northwood Space, a California-based start-up, is focused on producing ground stations or antennae for space satellite communication. The startup’s main focus is to provide efficient solutions for ground station operations enhancing space-satellite communication.

Her journey from acting to leading the space technology industry also includes notable educational achievements. These include a master’s degree in humanity and technology from MIT, a tech-focused PhD, and a law degree from Harvard Law School.

In an unconventional move into the space industry, Mendler began building antennas from everyday hardware items. Through this, she was able to receive satellite data from NOAA during the Covid-19 pandemic. Her interest and understanding of science were nurtured by her engineer parents who fostered an early love of science and math.

At Northwood Space, Mendler is not alone. Working together with her husband, CTO Griffin Cleverly and software leader Shaurya Luthra, they aim to influence the sector with their innovative approach. They’ve already attracted investment from major venture capital firms like Founders Fund, Andreessen Horowitz, Also Capital, and Humba Ventures, securing an initial investment of $6.3 million.

The team at Northwood Space is filled with experienced individuals from respected companies such as SpaceX, Palantir Technologies, and Northrop Grumman. Adding to the strong foundation, the company is set up to make significant strides in the industry.

When asked about Northwood’s mission, Mendler said the company has ambitious plans to “build a data highway between earth and space.” Looking at her successful transition and the strong team, it seems like a promising future awaits not just for her career but for the broader space communication industry.
