I don’t know how to access individual characters in a string.ie. accessing single elements in an array of characters.Each time I try I keep getting Type mismatch.

You have to use the Left$, Right$, and/or the Mid$ functions. Those let you access individual characters in a string. Look in the help for more information about those functions. Basically, you give the function a string, and the number and position of characters to retrieve.
