AWS Launches Programmable IoT Buttons

Enterprises could make it easier for end users to do many different things.

Last year, Amazon began selling physical buttons that customers could press to order items like laundry detergent, dog food, coffee and toilet paper from the company. According to analysts, Amazon has shipped between 300,000 and 500,000 buttons so far.

Now the company is expanding that program with a programmable button that can initiate a variety of activities handled by the Amazon Web Services cloud computing service. Its called the Amazon IoT Button. "You can code the button's logic in the cloud to configure button clicks to count or track items, call or alert someone, start or stop something, order services, or even provide feedback," Amazon explained on its website. "For example, you can click the button to unlock or start a car, open your garage door, call a cab, call your spouse or a customer service representative, track the use of common household chores, medications or products, or remotely control your home appliances."

Initial demand for the buttons was so high that the first round of available buttons sold out in one day.
