Session 4
Migrating to ASP.NET
On Demand
Robert McGovern, Senior Project Manager, Infusion Development
The final session will introduce the tools and techniques necessary to migrate a Java based Web application into ASP.NET. Although this session will introduce and provide examples on how to use the Java Language Conversion Assistant, the primary focus will be on the architectural considerations necessary in any migration. Specifically, the session will focus on the two phase nature of migration (migrate to ASP.NET, then adapt to ASP.NET) rather than just the mechanics of translating code.
Topics Covered:
Why (and why not) Migrate - The instructor will provide some technical and business guidance on when migration is a better option than interoperation or completely rewriting an application.
Migration Philosophy - In this segment, the instructor will highlight the major steps involved in migration as well as the design and business questions that must be considered when migrating.
The Java Language Conversion Assistant - During this segment, the instructor will show how the JLCA works, explain the migration report, and show some of the most common post-migration cleanup tasks.
After Migration - Once you have a working ASP.NET application, you must mentally switch modes from Java to ASP.NET. In this segment, the instructor will illustrate many of the design changes, extra features, or code upgrades that are possible when you fully leverage the ASP.NET framework after a migration.
