Anthropic, the AI company behind Claude, has cut access to Windsurf, a popular AI coding assistant. In an interview, Anthropic co-founder Jared Kaplan explained the decision, stating, “I think it would be odd for us to be selling Claude to OpenAI.” OpenAI, Anthropic’s largest competitor, is reportedly acquiring Windsurf. This move comes as AI companies increasingly compete with the startups that rely on their models.

Windsurf CEO Varun Mohan expressed concern, saying, “With less than five days of notice, nearly all of our first-party capacity to all Claude 3.x models has been cut off.” He added, “We are concerned that this conduct will harm many in the industry, not just Windsurf.

Meanwhile, another major AI player announced a new feature for ChatGPT that transcribes calls and generates meeting notes, directly competing with Granola, a popular AI tool for the same purpose. As these AI giants expand their product offerings, startups building businesses on their models face the risk of being copied by their providers.

The tension between the ambitions of AI companies and the needs of their API customers remains unresolved. As one chief product officer put it, “I think this is a really delicate question for all of the labs and one that I’m trying to approach thoughtfully.”

AI investor Zak Kukoff summed up the situation, saying, “At some point, model providers are going to need to decide if they want to be stable platforms or compete for every vertical.

This week’s events serve as a wake-up call for startups relying on AI models. Some are considering turning to established tech giants, such as Google, Amazon, and Microsoft, for more stable partnerships.

As the AI landscape continues to evolve, startups must navigate the delicate balance between collaboration and competition with the very companies that power their products. The industry is at a crossroads, and adaptation will be key to survival in this rapidly changing environment.
