The introduction of iOS 26 brings a new “Liquid Glass” design, described by Apple as a translucent interface that reflects and refracts its surroundings.

This new design approach will be integrated into CarPlay, replacing the basic 2D app icons with interactive emblems that appear to protrude from the screen. A new navigation bar, located on either side of the main screen, will provide easier access to favorite applications. CarPlay users often find incoming call notifications disruptive as they interfere with entertainment and navigation.

iOS 26 introduces a compact view that overlays the call notification, allowing users to see who is calling and decide whether to answer or reject the call without losing track of their navigation. Additionally, the upgrade includes Tapbacks and pinned conversations in the messaging app, making it simpler to reply to messages with emojis and keep track of conversations without taking your eyes off the road. Apple addresses one of CarPlay’s key concerns with the introduction of widgets.

For example, Apple Maps can dominate the infotainment display, while smaller widgets on the side display estimated arrival times, current track details, and even a live flight tracker.
Several iPhone-based features designed to minimize distractions are now available in vehicles. Call Screening builds on the current Live Voicemail feature by gathering information on the caller and presenting it as a notification. This allows users to decide whether to answer the call or not, helping to screen out unwanted calls.
Hold Assist is another new feature that detects hold music and offers to automatically hold the user’s place in the queue, calling them back when an operator is available. This helps users avoid wasting time listening to hold music while driving. iOS 26 brings a comprehensive update across Apple’s devices, including the CarPlay system.
The new features are designed to make using CarPlay more intuitive, less disruptive, and safer for drivers. From a fresh design to practical new functionalities, these updates mark a step forward for in-car technology.
