Apple is bringing its popular Journal app to the iPad and Mac with the release of iPadOS 26 and macOS 26. The app was first launched on the iPhone with iOS 17.2 and has been exclusive to that platform until now. On the iPad, users can create journal entries using the Apple Pencil.
They can write, draw, and add images to their entries. The larger screen provides a more immersive experience for journaling. Users can also keep multiple journals to separate different aspects of their lives.

The Mac version of the app focuses on providing a comfortable writing experience. Users can type out longer entries and include photos, videos, audio recordings, and location data. The app makes it easy to capture both everyday moments and special events.

Journal app expands to more devices
All journaling data is processed on-device and encrypted to protect user privacy. The app offers smart suggestions based on photos, workouts, and music-listening history, but these are generated locally and never shared without permission.
The Journal app will be available on a wide range of iPad models, including the iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPad, and iPad mini. The developer beta of iPadOS 26 is available now, with a public beta expected in July. The final release will arrive in the fall of 2025.
Many users have been requesting the Journal app on iPad for some time. Previously, they had to resort to workarounds like typing in the Notes app and pasting into Journal later. This update addresses those requests and makes journaling on Apple devices feel more complete.
The expansion to iPad and Mac aligns with Apple’s strategy of enhancing the user experience across its ecosystem. It allows users to document their lives in a creative and seamless way, no matter which device they are using.
