The new design, called Liquid Glass, brings a striking visual experience across its range of devices, including iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe 26, watchOS 26, and tvOS 26. Liquid Glass is a translucent material that adapts to surrounding content and light environments.

It utilizes real-time rendering to respond to movement, resulting in a dynamic and lively user experience.

The material extends from everyday elements, such as buttons and switches, to larger interface components, including the Lock Screen, Home Screen, notifications, and Control Center. Apple has also redesigned app interfaces to bring greater focus to content while maintaining a familiar feel.

Controls, toolbars, and navigation within apps have been updated to align with the rounded corners of modern hardware and app windows. Liquid Glass serves as a functional layer in these redesigns, dynamically morphing as users navigate through app features.

The new design spans across all of Apple’s platforms, updating system experiences such as the Lock Screen, Home Screen, desktop, and Dock.

For example, on the Lock Screen, the time is now crafted from Liquid Glass and adapts fluidly to fit elegantly behind the subject of photo wallpapers.

Developers using SwiftUI, UIKit, and AppKit have access to updated APIs that simplify the adoption of the new design.

By incorporating Liquid Glass and new controls, developers can refresh their app designs, making user interactions more intuitive and delightful. In addition to the design changes, Apple also announced updates to various features and apps. Spotlight search has been supercharged to be faster and more intuitive, while iPadOS sees significant updates that push the boundaries of what the device can do, introducing new multitasking and productivity features.

Group chats are set for an upgrade, integrating more advanced organizational tools and real-time collaboration capabilities. Apple continues its focus on AI, pivoting from its previously anticipated Siri-centric approach to a broader Artificial Intelligence framework termed “Apple Intelligence.” This development aims to make devices smarter and more capable of anticipating user needs. CarPlay, AirPods, and the Photos app also received updates to enhance performance and user experience.

CarPlay will now offer more seamless integration with vehicle systems, AirPods gain better noise cancellation and sound quality, and Photos will feature advanced editing tools powered by AI. Despite the exciting announcements, Apple faces several technical and regulatory challenges. Shares of Apple fell by 1.5 percent after executives took the stage at the event.
