A survey of more than 14,000 employees across various industries shows that employee behaviors involving sensitive data often put organizations at risk. The findings reveal that 80% of those surveyed access workplace applications from personal devices that lack necessary security controls. Furthermore, privileged access extends beyond IT administrators, with 40% of respondents habitually downloading customer data.

A third of respondents reported being able to alter sensitive data without appropriate controls. Roughly 30% admitted they can make such changes independently. Additionally, 49% of respondents confessed to reusing passwords for multiple work applications, while 36% use the same credentials for both work and personal applications.

Alarmingly, about 65% of employees acknowledged bypassing cybersecurity policies for convenience.

Risky employee behaviors threaten data

These practices significantly increase the risk of organizations falling victim to data leaks and breaches.

The security firm that conducted the survey warned that such behaviors are likely to continue with the growing use of advanced tools, including artificial intelligence. Around 72% of employees use AI tools, which can pose a threat, especially since 38% of employees only sometimes, if ever, follow guidelines dictating the safe handling of sensitive data when using AI. Businesses must take a more proactive approach to protect sensitive and confidential data.

This includes the implementation of stronger password policies, regular employee training on cybersecurity best practices, and stricter enforcement of security protocols. Failing to address these risky behaviors could leave companies vulnerable to costly data breaches and reputational damage. Experts emphasize the urgent need for organizations to strengthen cybersecurity awareness and enforce stricter security policies.

As the integration of AI tools in workplaces continues to grow, it is crucial for businesses to ensure that employees are well-informed about the potential risks and adhere to established guidelines for handling sensitive information.
